OK dumb question number one, is "favoriting" something basically liking it here, from a social behavior perspective?
Seems like most posts I'm seeing have zero favorites, so I'm wondering if that's socially taboo here. What do we do for the dopamine on mastadon?
@dylnuge My understanding is that there are "favorites" which would be akin to Twitter "likes" and communicated back to the toot, and then "bookmarks" which are kept private to you.
@nick What feels weird thus far is I seem to be the first person to favorite everything I'm favoriting; that or there's some quirk in how the numbers are updated (which is entirely possible!)
@nebkor TBH I was more worried I was committing some horrible social faux pas by favoriting everything 😅
@dylnuge I received a *notification* about you marking my initial reply as a favorite, and I can see it if I go to the details page for that toot, but I don't see a count in my normal timeline on that or any other post. That seems silly given that there's a working replies counter.
@nick I see a count, but it's *always* zero for me, even on posts with multiple boosts.
I suspect one of two things:
1. Favorites are hidden by default (or can be default hidden on server settings), so we aren't seeing them mostly.
2. Some sort of bug, possibly related to the challenges of caching and coordinating a counter display when federation is in the mix.
@nick er, rather, it's exactly 1 *if* I've favorited something, which the screenshot shows but I failed to describe properly
@dylnuge "favorite" or "star" means, "hey, author, I liked what you said!"
"boost"ing means, "hey, everyone who follows me, and is on my local server, I liked this!"
@dylnuge I saw a very helpful explanation of this! https://mastodon.social/@jerrylevine/109291397662530122
